About

My name is James Howie and I am a Freelance Graphic Designer who is currently living and working in Lincoln, Lincolnshire.

My Story

My name is James Howie and I was originally from the North East of England. From my home in Stocksfield I went to Prudhoe Community High School where I completed two A-levels in Art and Product Design.

After finishing my A-levels I then moved to a small town called Alston in Cumbria. From there I continued in a westerly direction to Carlisle where I studied at the University of Cumbria. After four years I successfully graduated with a 2:1 BA (Hons) degree in graphic design.

The following year I learnt to drive and passed my test whilst I started to hunt for a graphic design job. This led to an unexpected opportunity in Allendale, Northumberland. At this location I had the chance to complete a Young Rural Entrepreneurs Scheme using a studio inside the Allendale Forge Studios. This marked the official beginning of Howiesgraphics in 2015.

The freelance life was very enjoyable but I still had a strong ambition to find a full-time graphic design position so that I could pursue a career in my specialist subject. Later that year my dreams came true as I joined the team at Hoggett Creative in Annan, Scotland. During my time there I had the delight of working on Strong Maths (an educational resource pack for primary schools).

In my spare time I continued to build my small business and developed my knowledge of photography. Leading to the creation of a small collection of seasonal photographs. These have now been made into greeting cards and have been sold at many craft fairs. These greeting cards are also available to purchase (along with a framed photography print) from my Etsy store. Additionally I have a Society6 shop where you can purchase my illustration work on a selection of products.

It was also at this time when I was gifted with another fantastic opportunity. Through a family friend I was made the new typesetter for the Gilbert and Sullivan News. A magazine published by the Gilbert and Sullivan Society three times a year. When I began my journey with the Society a new volume was born and I have now produced three issues and currently working on the fourth.

At the end of August last year I relocated to Lincoln to start a new job at Running Imp as a graphic designer. Creating all kinds of artwork for event supplies including the companies renowned specialism with the production of Bespoke Medals.

With my strong passion towards design I have continued with Howiesgraphics in the evenings and weekends. If you’re interested to see what I can do for you then please check out my graphic design services page. Even with all of this experience I am excited to see what the future brings.
